ACTIVITY 2| SCALE AND CONTEXT

The second Think Lab activity takes on the learnings acquired from the previous activity. Besides helping us to develop our creativity, it helped us to look at different possibilities from an object.

This activity was based on scale and context.

Scale: The scale is generally understood as an object's size in relation to a system of measurement. While we can speak of things that are "large or small in scale," when discussing scale in art and design we are referring to the size of an object in relation to a clear set of measurements.

For example: When we see a skyscraper, it’s impressive because it’s so much taller than what’s around it.

And why do we like seeing Taj Mahal, Qutub Minar and Statue of Unity?

Context: The context is understanding the relationship of the object to its surrounding circumstances. By simply changing the context and the scale of an object (maintaining its 1:1:1 ratio) , we can radically alter its meaning and expressive power.

The American artist has "scaled up" an everyday object--a Swiss army knife. In addition to creating an enlargement of the knife, he has changed its function and placed it in an unexpected context--the canals of Venice, Italy!

Warm-up Activity

The first activity of the day was a shorter prelude to the longer session to be held later in the day. It was meant to familiarise us with the activity and prepare us for the larger session to be held later.

In the warm-up session, each group was assigned a particular object. Afterward, each member of the group had to make 10 perspectives of the object that they were assigned.

Our group was assigned a ‘paper cutter.'

Post the warm-up session there will be a small sharing of ideas in class.

Main Activity

We continued working in our respective groups for the main activity as well.

For this activity, we drew our conceived objects with respect to their scale and use.

These were the ideas that I came up with:

I thought of creating a vertical spacing bookshelf by enlarging the size of the cutter.

In the other one, I have imagined a lift in building from a cutter. The slider of the cutter is the lift which can be moved upwards and downwards according to the respective floor. The small boxes on the right-hand side of the cutter are used to make cubicles of the building.

Discussions

For these sessions, we were divided into a group of 4 members. My group members were Kriti, Mehak Soneja, and Adrisha.

Post lunch, we shared our work as groups to the other groups. Our faculties and peers gave constructive feedback and also appreciative feedback.

Reflection

The most intimidating part of the think lab is that I get to work with my peers. I liked the session a lot because it taught us something different, something imaginative which can be applied in the physical world. Along with that, communication is the most appreciable skill that I learn from these think lab sessions.

LEARNING MANTRAS

  • Think out of the box: We should perceive an object differently.

  • Visualization: It is an important part of the designing process because it's a way of unlocking a different part of our brain as well as our creativity.

REFLECTION
